چکیده
This is an account of the life and work of Robert Koch (1843-1910), Nobel Laureate in Medicine and a founder of the science of bacteriology. In particular, Koch's researches into tuberculosis are described - the discovery of the tubercle bacillus, the controversy regarding the human and bovine types, the Koch phenomenon, and the introduction of tuberculin, which proved to be ineffective as a cure but became important as a diagnostic tool in the management of tuberculosis. By his achievements in this field, Koch may be considered to be the father of the scientific study of tuberculosis. On the occasion of the centenary of Koch's discovery of the tubercle bacillus in 1882, we pay tribute to this great German master of medicine.Robert Koch's discovery of the tubercle bacillus in 1882 was a major event in the history of medicine, a turning point in our understanding and conquest of that deadly disease which had plagued mankind for millenia. After centuries of speculation as to the possible infectious nature of tuberculosis, Koch proved conclusively that the cause of the disease was infection by a specific micro-organism which he isolated. In tuberculosis, both seed and soil play their part, but without the seed - the tubercle bacillus - there is no disease. On the occasion of the centenary of Koch's discovery of the tubercle bacillus, we pay tribute to the father of the modern scientific approach to the management of tuberculosis.

Koch's Discovery of the Tubercle Bacillus—Its Importance and Significance
It was just fifty years ago that Robert Koch made the epoch-making discovery of the tubercle bacillus as the cause of tuberculosis. The first announcement of this discovery was made by him in March 1882 before a meeting of the Physiological Society of Berlin and the modern era of tuberculosis may be said to begin from that date. Before this discovery tuberculosis was believed to be due to some ...
متن کاملPresent Status of Immunisation against Tuberculosis
The discovery of the tubercle bacillus by Robert Koch in 1882 and his classical demonstration, in 1891, of the effect of a second infection with tubercle bacilli in an already tuberculous guinea pig, which later came to be known as the ‘Koch phenomenon’, heralded scores of attempts to develop a specific immunising agent against tuberculosis, derived from the tubercle bacillus. The attempts were...
متن کاملCarlo Forlanini, inventor of artificial pneumothorax for treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.
The year 1882 was an annus mirabilis in the history of pulmonary tuberculosis, for it saw not only the discovery of the tubercle bacillus by Robert Koch but also the introduction of artificial pneumothorax treatment by Carlo Forlanini. At that time Koch's spectacular achievements and the exaggerated expectations raised after the introduction of tuberculin tended to overshadow the significance o...

Tuberculosis was a disease known to the ancients, and has plagued humankind throughout known history and human prehistory. Formerly known as ‘phthysis’, Schönlein introduced ‘tuberculosis’ in 1839 where he indicated the disease resulting from the infection with the tubercle, which was described earlier by Sylvius, in 1650. The first major break-through however, was by Jean-Antoine Villemin (182...

This book, written by one of the best authorities on the subject, contains the substance of lectures delivered in December, 1880, and January, 188.1, before the discovery of the tubercle bacillus by Dr. Robert Koch in 1882. At the meeting of the International Congress in Copenhagen, in 1884, it was asserted by Dr. Jaccoud, in elegant and forcible language, that the discovery of the bacillus had...
